PROSTHETICS Faqs

Prosthetic dentistry is the replacement of missing teeth with either fixed or removable dentures. Tooth loss is something that affects millions of people every year. Fortunately, prosthodontic dentistry can help.

Natural teeth may have been lost due for many reasons, such as caries (dental decay), periodontal (gum) disease, or trauma. For people who are already edentulous (i.e. have no natural teeth), the objectives of prosthetic treatment are generally to improve speech, appearance, chewing and biting, comfort and the ability to laugh, shout, kiss, etc., without the dentures becoming dislodged.

Along with the latest state-of-the-art technologies, dentures have also improved in comfort, stability and longevity. Dentures are classified as partial or full
There are various reasons why natural teeth can get lost, such as periodontal (gum) disease, caries (dental decay) or trauma.
Edentulous is when you don’t have natural teeth. Therefore the use of prosthetic treatment can be extremely beneficial to improve speech, chewing, biting, comfort and of course, appearance. Prosthetic treatment can also improve the ability to shout, laugh, kiss, etc., without the dentures shifting or in some cases being dislodged.
Dentures can be classified as partial or full: Partial dentures are made to replace a small proportion of lost teeth. They provide stability and support as they can be retained on adjacent natural teeth using the latest in dental technology.
A complete denture replaces all the teeth in one dental arch. As with any kind of prosthesis, dentures take time to get used to. Good prosthetic dentistry is a team effort involving patient, dental technician and dentist. We take time to ensure your dentures are a perfect fit. This is the case as we realise you will be wearing them for most of the day and it is imperative that they do not irritate your gums or cause problems eating. With some practice and time, most patients find their speech, appearance and confidence will be at 100%.

In some cases, i.e. when the patient has a complete lower denture, implants may be recommended to hold the replacement teeth in position. This may be necessary as the complete lower denture is largely retained by the skill of the patient to hold it in place using the tongue, lips and cheek muscles.
At Wallington Smiles, we take time to ensure your dentures are a perfect fit and feel as natural as possible because we know that the quality of good prosthetic dentistry is down to a choosing the right dental technician and dentist for you.

The importance of the comfort of dentures is vital; therefore it is imperative that dentures do not irritate your gums or cause problems eating as you will be wearing them for most of the day. In time and with some practice, most patients find their speech, appearance and confidence will be at 100%. We will help you with each step of this process.

Because of advances with state-of-the-art technologies, dentures have also improved in stability, longevity and comfort.
